It is well known that it is not wise to open arbitrary URLs.

Review Ask VT: check if a file is safeThe VirusTotal service (via virustotal.com) helps to check Internet addresses. It is checked whether the underlying pages and files do not contain malware. Various engines are used for the check and the service is provided free of charge by Google. With the free Ask VT app you can add this functionality to the iPhone and iPad, so that you quickly know whether a file or URL is safe.

The functionality is added to the operating system itself. For example, you can call up the functionality via the Share menu as soon as you want to share a url or file with another user. The URL or file hash (the file’s unique attributes by which it can be identified) is sent to VirusTotal. Afterwards you will receive an overview with a score per threat, for example Harmless or Malicious. You can also get the details in Safari.

The app is relatively new and its functionality is limited. However, that makes the app particularly compact and valuable in everyday use.
