The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is an extendable gimbal with 3-axis stabilization. Interesting, but what is it and how does it work? Read it in our review of the DJI Osmo Mobile 6.

A while ago, the PC-Active editorial staff received the Osmo Mobile 6 gimbal from DJI. A gimbal is a so-called stabilizer that ensures that your camera, smartphone or action cam is always stable when you take photos or film. So you can just walk around and move with it, because the movements and vibrations are corrected by the mechanical stabilizers, which also have two or three axes, so they can correct both horizontal and vertical images. Ok, the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 gimbal we tested has 3 axes, read the review here.
Design and specifications
The dimensions of the folded gimbal are 189 x 84.5 x 44 mm (L x W x H) and when unfolded, the dimensions of the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 are 276 x 111.5 x 99 mm (L x W x H ). Furthermore, the tripod in the box (L x D) is 138 x 32 mm. The beautiful white-gray DJI Osmo Mobile 6 weighs approximately 305 grams, the tripod approximately 72 grams and the magnetic telephone clamp approximately 25 grams. The box also contains a quick start guide, safety guidelines and warranty paper. The quick start guide is small with photos that explain how to turn on the gimbal, although it is a bit unclear. I actually miss a manual where the functions of the gimbal are described. You can find this online on the product page in the video, where everything is explained. The DJI Osmo Mobile does not come with a charger, but you may have a USB-C charger lying around. The DJI Osmo Mobile has 5.1 Bluetooth and requires the DJI Mimo app to function properly. You must download the app via an apk via the Android Play Store, but this is not necessary in the Samsung Store. If you have an Apple device, go to the Apple App Store.
Your smartphone must also meet certain conditions to be compatible with this gimbal: weight between 170 and 290 grams, thickness between 6.9 and 10 mm and width between 67 and 84 mm.
The battery lasts almost 6.5 hours and it takes more than 1 hour and 20 minutes to fully charge the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 with a 10W USB-C charger).
Installation and options
The installation of the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is very easy: you have to charge the gimbal, unfold it, put the phone clamp on your phone and put the phone clamp on the gimbal. Please note that the magnet may be stronger than you expect when you put the phone clamp on the gimbal.
Then you need to download the app which functions like a normal camera app on most phones, but with integrations of the functions of the gimbal itself. There are four functions: Follow mode, Tilt Lock, FPV and SpinShot. With Follow mode you can select an object or person to follow and if that object or person moves, the camera will follow by rotating the gimbal. However, the tracking of the follow mode is not very good: if you go a little too fast, the camera loses you and cannot track you. With Tilt Lock you lock the gimbal so that it only follows the pan movement. This function worked very well and was great for horizontal filming. With FPV mode, all three axes of the gimbal follow the movement of your camera and is (also) intended for filming stationary things such as buildings and statues. With SpinShot you can rotate the camera, although you cannot rotate it infinitely, which I thought was a shame. The tripod is good enough, it is a shame that it can only be set to the lowest setting and you cannot adjust it to raise or lower it.
Usage
The first thing I noticed while using the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is that with the tripod attached it is quite a bit heavier than it originally looks. Filming is pleasant, but also difficult to understand first. As mentioned, you have to look up the functions online, then you have to practice and find out how each function worked. Even now I’m not sure how the FPV function works… Once you get the hang of it, it’s quite fun. Below you can see a video where I show examples of the 4 functions and what the gimbal looks like.
Price and availability
The DJI Osmo Mobile 6 has a suggested retail price of €149 and is available in platinum gray and slate gray.
Conclusion: the DJI Osmo Mobile 6 is a compact, extendable so-called gimbal (‘stabilizing holder’) that allows you to easily take beautiful selfies, photos and videos from different positions. With a handy Quick Launch, great app and pre-programmed recording modes, it is highly recommended for content creators.
