Many smartwatches report that they can measure blood pressure, but how accurate is that? The Huawei Watch D2 is certified for this and also stylish and innovative.
The Huawei Watch D2 is an almost square smartwatch and is 48 x 38 x 13.3 mm in size. The aluminum housing ensures a light but sturdy construction, while the rounded corners give the watch a modern look. The convex glass houses a 1.82inch amoled screen with 480 x 480 pixels, which guarantees a sharp display. The D2 is available in two colors: black and silver/beige. With a weight of 84 grams (including strap), the watch is comfortable. It meets the IP68 standard, but is not usable in water, such as in swimming pools or in the shower.
Blood pressure gauge
During the installation, instructions are given on how the universal tire, which is adjustable per 4 mm, can be optimally adjusted for accurate heart rate and blood pressure measurements. The tire has an air cushion that is blown up as soon as the blood pressure measurement is started. The Huawei Watch D2 has been approved as a blood pressure monitor in the Netherlands and is certified for medical use. The device supports Ambulatory Blood Pressure Monitoring (ABPM), which means that it can constantly measure blood pressure for 24 hours without extra hardware or calibration. The results measured manually or via an ABPM measurement plan are stored locally by the Harmonyos operating system and synchronized via Bluetooth with the Dutch-language Huawei Health Telephone app, which is available for both Android and Apple’s iOS. The blood pressure results can be requested per period and are provided with a color code (green, orange, red). These and other results can be shared through extensive health reports.
More functions
The other functions are almost identical to those of the Huawei Watch GT5 series (see PC-Active 339), where many apps have already been installed or can be downloaded from the Harmonyos store. A wide range of dials is available, including variants with direct blood pressure and heart display. There will be around 80 workouts supported, using the built -in GPS. In addition, ECG, heart rate, stress, Spo2, sleep quality and skin temperature are also measured and reported. NFC payments are not yet supported and not all apps for smartwatches are available under Harmonyos. For reports, telephone conversations and storage space for music reproduction you depend on your smartphone.
Test results
In a test environment we have compared blood pressure and heart rate measurements with results from measuring instruments in a doctor’s office. The results of the watch were found to match that of professional equipment. However, it is crucial to follow the guidelines for correct measurement, such as keeping the watch informed of the heart and remain stable during the measurement. The battery life depends on the use, including the number of measurements, and uses without ABPM between 10 and 15% per day. The battery is fully charged within about an hour and a half.
All in all, the Huawei Watch D2 is a technical miracle.
