Review MediaInfo: more insight into media files

When it comes to audio and video files, you often have to deal with a multitude of file formats. Think of avi, wmv and mkv files. If you want more information about a media file, the file properties window often shows only brief information. With the MediaInfo program you have more insight.

The program consists of several tabs. Click on a tab for more information about the sub-area, for example about the codec used. MediaInfo supports audio and video files. If you are a more advanced user, you can also interpret additional data, for example how the stream is structured. The app also shows all kinds of useful information, such as the bit ratethe compression method used and the sound format within a video.

The information is shown in compact reports. It can be useful to export the analyzes in a text file, for example if you need to share the data or in the context of troubleshooting.
Do not expect too much from the text and explanation when using it: the options are hardly explained and the makers are sparing with giving tips or explaining the settings.
