The coaxial cable network in the Netherlands is dominated by Ziggo and transports Internet and Radio/TV. Since the beginning of this year, users have free choice of modem.
The modem is the link between the coaxial connection and the router. Both can be found in the router. The DOCSIS3.1 is used for communication. This protocol, as well as lower versions, is supported by the FRITZ!Box 6690 and allows speeds of up to 6 Gbps. The latter, however, depends on the service provider’s offer and the contract one has concluded.
The question will arise what the added value is of an AVM FRITZ!Box cable router compared to a standard cable modem/router. An important difference is the support of Wifi6 and Mesh, as well as functionality and management.
Wi-Fi6
Wifi6 offers, compared to Wifi5, a more stable Internet, even if several devices communicate at the same time; higher speed and optimized data transfer through multiple simultaneous sessions; less lag, better security (WPA3) and longer battery life when the devices are asleep and not using Wi-Fi. With Wifi6, the network is therefore used much more effectively.
Mesh
Mesh is a technique in which several nodes are included in the network to increase coverage in a building, whereby the configuration settings are automatically adopted and the equipment therefore forms one network. The internet router can as Mesh master serve as a Mesh repeater with a whole range of other AVM equipment. The WiFi equipment connects to the node with the best frequency band and fastest connection.
Functionality
The 6690 offers: IP4/IP6 with Wifi6 with up to 6000Mps throughput with WPA3 security and guest usage; for LAN, there are 2.5Gbps and 3*1Gbps connections; VPN client and server services; an extensive DECT telephone exchange for 6 devices; 2*USB3 for NAS and media server function; dect smart home and a dvb-c tuner.
Management
Management of the 6690 can be done via the browser, both locally and remote. There is a built-in diagnostic tool as well event logging. Useful apps are available to access and measure speeds. A support site offers a lot of information about the configuration options. A helpdesk is available for other questions.
Based on the above, you can determine whether this added value appeals to you. The cable providers and AVM have posted instructions on their website on how to start the replacement process. The cabinet of the FB6690 measures (wxhxd): 85 x 209 x 273 mm. It is a table model without suspension device. The measured performance and tested functions of the 6690 are the same as previously tested FRITZ!Box routers and are fine. We measure effective WiFi transport speeds of up to 700Mbps. Please note that the responsibility for configuring the FRITZ!Box router lies with the end user.
