The combination of ‘new money’ and increasingly outrageous design often results in cars that look like they were drawn by a ten-year-old, but Rolls-Royce goes a step further. It actually engaged children to design cars, during the ‘Young Designer Competition’.
The design competition is already behind us and Rolls Royce pushes the undoubtedly proud winners forward in a press release. It goes without saying that the results are completely devoid of any sense of reality, just like the fact that Rolls-Royce will not do anything with the designs. Still it is nice to see what the children came up with.
The task for the participants was to come up with a dream Rolls for the future. The results make it abundantly clear that no further requirements were imposed on the feasibility of the creations. The children, all under 16, came with, among other things, a flying ‘car’ with four jet engines instead of wheels, a luxurious projectile in the shape of a honey bee and an autonomous capsule with giant wheels. There is also a car that is obviously superyacht based, including a helicopter parked on the roof, a swimming pool and a sundeck.
There is not one overall winner, but one winner in each category. For the sake of completeness, we list the relevant designs here:
Category: TechnologyRolls-Royce Bluebird II by Chenyang, 13, China
Category: EnvironmentRolls-Royce Capsule by Saya, 6, Japan
Category: FantasyRolls-Royce Turtle Car by Florian, 16, France
Category: FunRolls-Royce Glow by Léna, 11, Hungary
Honorable mention to:
Rolls-Royce Bolt by Declan, 10, United Kingdom
Rolls-Royce Prosperity by Tim, 9, Germany
Rolls-Royce House of Esperanto by Alisa, 6, Russia
The children submitted their design as an ‘old-fashioned’ hand-made drawing. The best ideas were rewarded with a beautiful 3D version of that idea by Rolls-Royce. It must be said: in all cases that has led to a slick result.
