Apple reportedly has plans to make the Apple TV app available for Android soon. Why would Apple want to expand the app? iPhoned explains.
Apple TV app coming out for Android
So far, the Apple TV app has been available mainly for – as you would expect – Apple devices. A number of televisions that run on Android have had access to Apple TV + for some time, the first Apple TV app was already released in 2020 for a Sony television.
Apple has long been reluctant to release the Apple TV app for Android. That seems to be changing since last year: Apple then brought the Apple TV app to the Chromecast with Google TV. Apple is now taking it a step further, because the Apple TV app may be released for all smartphones and tablets that run on Android.
Apple TV to Android: a bigger market
With the release of the Apple TV app on Android devices, Apple is making a clear choice. Where Apple first often preferred exclusivity, the company now gives priority to increasing the target group. Of course, by releasing the app on all Android devices, many more people will get access to the streaming service.
With this greater reach, Apple can compete with other streaming services such as Netflix and HBO Max. For the time being, it is rumored that Apple will release the app to Android devices, but it would at least give an interesting twist to the relationships between the streaming platforms.
Will Messages for Android follow Apple Music?
It would not be the first time that Apple chooses to also bring an Apple app to Android: the company previously did this with Apple Music. This happened soon after Apple Music was released for the iPhone, greatly expanding the reach of Apple Music.
So the question is to what extent Apple wants to sacrifice exclusivity for a wider range. For example, the company has so far shown no interest in releasing a Messages app for Android. The Apple TV app, on the other hand, generates money for Apple, so the company benefits from a larger market. So this could be a logical next step after the release of Apple Music for Android.
So for now it’s just a rumor, but Apple could become a formidable competitor for Netflix with an Apple TV app for Android.
