Saab’s trademark rights are up for grabs again. At least, sort of. Those who would like to have the trademark rights of Saab and are willing to pay a heavy price for it, will also receive the current owner of the brand name: National Electric Vehicles Sweden.
It has been more than nine years since National Electric Vehicle Sweden acquired the trademark rights of the then moribund Saab. NEVS is based in Sweden but it is a majority-owned subsidiary of the Chinese Evergrande Group, and that company is now in a particularly difficult financial situation. In China, NEVS sold, among other things, an electric version of the last generation 9-3, initially under the brand name Saab and since 2017 with simply NEVS labels. National Electric Vehicle Sweden is now looking for new owners, Automotive News reports.
NEVS CEO Stefan Tilk tells Automotive News that NEVS has the financial resources to keep it up for a while, but how long NEVS can keep its head above water is the question. Parent company Evergrande Group is in serious financial trouble. According to Tilk, NEVS is a stick in the door for the Chinese Evergrande to enter the European market. A stick that may not be able to keep that door ajar for much longer.
