Practically every large Dutch bank has an iOS app with which you can arrange your banking affairs on your mobile. In terms of ease of use and possibilities, the ING app stands out above the rest. This way you make optimal use of the app.
You no longer need a PC or Mac to transfer money and check your account. The mobile apps of Dutch banks have been greatly improved and expanded in recent years, allowing you to do practically all your banking affairs on your iPhone or iPad. Security is also fine, provided you provide the app with a password and do not start banking when you are connected to an unsecured (open) WiFi network.
Below we show you how to easily get started with the ING app for iOS, and which options you have.
Set up ING Banking
After you have downloaded ING Banking from the App Store and started the app, you must first enter your details. Press ‘Register’ and enter your account number, the number and validity date of your debit card and your date of birth. For the next step you will need a computer to obtain the confirmation code. This ensures that the app and your iPhone are authorized for mobile banking. Log in to Mijn ING and go to Mobile Banking (activate). Click on ‘Activate’ here and follow the steps on the screen. In the app you must then enter the code and accept the conditions.
What follows is an important final step: setting a five-digit code to secure the ING app. After all, you do not want others to have access to your bank details just like that. Choose a unique code and take the time to remember it. After all, you need the code to log in and approve payments.
Security with Touch ID
If your iPhone or iPad has a fingerprint scanner, you can use it to log in quickly and securely. To set up Touch ID, open the menu with the button at the top left. Tap Settings, then tap Fingerprint. Then choose to enable Touch ID for logging in or logging in and confirming (for payments).
Use Siri to pay
ING Banking has been supporting voice assistant Siri since the beginning of 2017. You can use Siri to send or receive money through a payment request. Activate the function via the settings and use the voice command ‘Hey Siri, I want to transfer money’. You then have the option to enter an amount and make a payment with Touch ID (or your pin code). You can also ask the voice assistant to receive a payment. After confirmation, the app handles the payment request and you can share it via WhatsApp or e-mail, for example.
Incidentally, the ING app had already had speech recognition for voice control and confirming payments for some time. To do this, use is made of the speech recognition technology from Nuance Communications.
Payment request via the Messages app
ING was the first bank to support Apple’s Messages app for sending and receiving payment requests. Handy if you still have money left after a night out with friends. Make sure you have the latest version of ING Banking to use the function.
Without leaving the Messages app, you enter the amount, choose a category (pizza, film, drink) and then the app creates a special link. The other presses this to be forwarded directly to a page, where he can transfer the amount due.
QR codes for (re) payments
As an ING customer you are probably familiar with the TAN codes that are required to complete payments. These codes make the app redundant; now you can pay for iDEAL purchases on your pc directly with the Banking app. When paying online via iDEAL you will find the option ‘Pay with the Mobile Banking App’. This will request a QR code that you can scan in the app. You can then use Touch ID to securely complete the transaction. The QR code scanner (‘Scanner’) can be found at the bottom of the hamburger menu, which you open with the button at the top right.
You can also create a payment request with a QR code in the app (via ‘Payment request> New payment request’) to make a refund even easier. The video below shows how it works.
More settings
In the settings you will find some other functions. For example, you can set a daily limit (up to 5000 euros) with an end date of your choice. You also have the option to quickly see your balance on your login screen, the message center or your Apple Watch. This way you can easily keep a finger on the pulse. Or look ahead to see which planned collections and expenses are coming up.
Finally, you can arrange matters with regard to notifications, language (Dutch or English) and your mobile PIN code via the settings. If you have a business account, you can easily add it via ‘Settings> Add business banking’. Have your login details ready and follow the steps on the screen.
