Sales figures: the outliers of November

Electric car is more important for brands like Mercedes than for Volkswagen

Sales figures: the outliers of November

The monthly sales figures invariably lend themselves to a solid game of detective work. The longer you look at it, the more things catch your eye. This time we will also visit the car brands that are active on the Dutch market from A to Z, so that we can highlight all the striking things for you.

At the very top Aiways, but that brand – just like last month – sold zero cars. Proceed to Alfa Romeo, which has been reviving a little bit since the introduction of the Tonale. A little bit, because in November they managed to sell 54 of them. It brings the total Alfa Romeo sales for 2022 to 307, so it is significant in that respect. The brand also sold two Stelvios and seven Giulias in November.

Few figures really stand out at Alpine, Aston Martin and Audi, although we do see that Audi the TT, A7 and E-tron GT find little demand. The TT is almost out and will not return in a similar form, but there is hardly anyone who thinks they should take their chance. No new ones were registered in November, only five in the whole of 2022. The same applies to the Audi A7 for November, although the annual total for that model is nine. What is striking about the sales of the E-tron GT is that it is doing a lot less well than the more expensive but technically related Porsche Taycan. November: eleven and 108 pieces respectively. Throughout 2022: 135 and 654 respectively.

Audi E-tron GT vs. Porsche Taycan

The Porsche Taycan far outperforms the Audi E-tron GT in terms of sales numbers.

Six Bentley Flying Spurs in one month

Bentley did good business in November with the Flying Spur (six units) and BMW who registered the first i7s (ten copies). It has not sold any of the conventionally powered 7-series and the electric i4 is BMW’s absolute November topper with 304 units. Also notable: the iX performed almost as well as the iX3, with 96 and 97 sales respectively.

The next B is that of Build Your Dreams, in other words BYD. That brand started well and well in the Netherlands last month and put 83 copies of the electric Atto 3 on Dutch registration. By no means every Dutch person is afraid of new Chinese products, as can also be seen later in this overview.

We scroll past Citroën, Cupra, Dacia, DS, Ferrari and Fiat, although it is nice to report that at Dacia at the moment the Jogger is the top seller (272 units), followed by the relatively cheap and electric Spring (208 units). The latter is certainly also popular with meal delivery companies. Bee Fiat it generally doesn’t get along, but the 500(e) remains a rock solid number, cashing in over 500 orders in November. Fiat’s number two is the Fiat Ulysse (a passenger van) with 34 pieces… so quickly.

The Ford Fiesta disappears, but is still doing very well

Nice to report about Ford is that its veterans do best: both in November and throughout 2022, the near-dead Fiesta and Focus are the most popular, followed by the Puma. Honda plays a role in the margin in the Netherlands and managed to sell 43 cars in November, with which the brand will pass 1,000 units over the whole of 2022. It is possible that the new Civic, which we liked positively, knows how to turn the tide a bit. Meanwhile, nothing significant happened at Hyundai, Jaguar managed to sell a total of ten cars in November.

kia keeps clicking new license plates into holders and does so especially with Picantos and Niros, with the latter recently taking over from the previous one. Not that that was really necessary, because despite the fact that the new one has only just arrived, Kia has already sold almost 7,000 Niros in total over 2022. The Sportage, EV6 and Ceed meanwhile continue to do very well.

Bee Range Rover landed the new Sport, of which it sold no less than 49 last month. We see further down the line of brands Lynk & Co, which is doing very good business with its 01. In November, 614 new copies were registered and it sold more than 5,000 throughout 2022 – a lot. Another Asian with a higher profile who – with or without completely different figures – stood out in November is the Mazda MX-30. The Japanese managed to sell 25 of them last month, bringing the annual total to 182. We are curious whether the upcoming version with Wankel engine will be able to make some progress next year.

The difference between Mercedes’ EQ models…

The total sales numbers of Mercedes are not particularly high given the extensive range, but the popularity of its electric EQ models is striking. Mercedes sold more than twice as many units of the EQA, EQB, EQC, EQE and the EQV as their counterparts with combustion engines. We can cautiously conclude from this that electric cars are now preferred in the higher segment. Meanwhile blows up Opel the Insignia takes its last breath (7 pieces) and takes care of the aforementioned Taycan Porsche for the numbers (108 out of a total of 175 sales).

Mazda MX-30

Mazda’s mischievous electric crossover was good for 25 sales in November.

We meet further down Rolls Roycewhich, with zero cars sold in November, means an average monthly sale of exactly one car over 2022, and Volkswagen sisters seat and Skoda. Skoda sold twice as many cars as Seat, which is almost entirely due to the electric Enyaq (although the Kodiaq also outperforms the comparable Tarraco by more than four times).

That brings us to Subaru, where an electric car also provides the big(er) figures. That brand recently started supplying the Solterra, of which there are now a total of 24 on license plates. Toyota did the same with the bZ4X and managed to sell 94 already. Furthermore, it seems that deliveries of the GR86 are starting at Toyota, because five of them were registered in November against an annual total of six. In the meantime, the brand managed to sell two copies of the Mirai again, which, partly because of this, has found 25 buyers so far in 2022. Hyundai sold 62 copies of the Nexo, the only other hydrogen car on the market, this year.

…and Volkswagen’s ID models

Tesla meanwhile remains somewhat in the background with 137 November sales and sold only twelve cars in addition to 125 units of the Model Y. Let’s look at the numbers Volkswagen, then we know that from now on you can see the first ID Buzz’s on the road, because the first copies were given a license plate (19 pieces). We also see that the Golf, Taigo and Tiguan are all doing better than both the ID3 and the ID4. The Polo is the most popular.

Volkswagen Taigo

The Volkswagen Taigo, a small crossover with sloping roofline on the same basis as the Polo.

Finally, we see that Volvo something similar is going on with Skoda, because the most popular crossover also accounts for half of sales in Sweden. Where this is a purely electric model at Skoda, it is at Volvo with the XC40 (659 units), a car that is also available with hybrid powertrains. Still, the lion’s share of XC40 sales will most likely be all-electric units. The C40 was good for 158 sales in November, the XC90 is still doing relatively well despite its advanced age (64 units).
