Mainly diesel, electric on the rise

Van sales have increased considerably this year. Up to and including September, this amounts to a sales growth of more than 20 percent. The lion’s share of vans still run on diesel, but sales of electric ones have now doubled.
According to figures from the European car industry organization ACEA, almost 54,000 vans (up to 3.5 tons) were sold in the Netherlands in the first nine months of the year. That is more than a fifth more than in the same period last year. This mainly concerns diesel vans. Of these, more than 44,000 were sold, or 81 percent. Only about 14 percent had an electric drivetrain, or more than 7,400 units. Not a large share all in all, but a doubling compared to last year.
In the EU as a whole, ACEA counted approximately 1 million new vans in the first three quarters, more than 14 percent more than a year ago. Growth in the Netherlands is therefore well above average. The Central Bureau of Statistics (CBS) recently reported that Dutch companies have increased their investments recently, despite the economic recession. For example, in August more than 6 percent more was invested compared to the same month last year. More money was invested especially in means of transport, including vans and trucks.
