Samsung announces UFS 4.0: more efficient and faster storage for your phone

Samsung has developed a new UFS (Universal Flash Storage) storage. Samsung’s UFS 4.0 should be no less than twice as fast as UFS 3.1 and UFS 3.0, the current standards. It should also work more efficiently and therefore be 46% faster in sequential reading speeds, which will make reading files a lot faster. In the third quarter we may encounter UFS 4.0 in smartphones, for example.

Faster Storage

Files, apps and documents keep getting bigger, bigger and bigger. Where we used to have enough of 16 GB of storage capacity on our smartphone, the minimum is now 128 GB. In addition to the fact that smartphones are getting more and more storage capacity, the form of this storage is also becoming faster. And in the latter, Samsung is taking another step with UFS 4.0.

What is UFS 4.0?

When we write about a smartphone with a storage capacity of 128 GB, we mean the amount of flash memory. The memory of, for example, a smartphone where files such as photos, videos, apps and other data are stored. The UFS standard plays an important role in this, especially when we talk about speed. In other words, the speed at which these files are read by your device and how quickly they can be started up.

Samsung now promises to make a big leap in this with UFS 4.0, so reports the company on Twitter. According to Samsung, this will improve energy efficiency and read speed, among other things. This should make it twice as fast as UFS 3.1, the predecessor of UFS 4.0. This makes UFS 4.0 ideal for smartphones that have to process a lot of data. And this makes USF 4.0 very suitable for devices that use 5G or augmented reality applications.

When are we going to see it?

Samsung reports that production of USF 4.0 will start in the third quarter of this year. With this, it is probably just too late for the new foldable devices of the brand, and that is why we think we will encounter it earlier in the Samsung Galaxy S23.
