Qualcomm took advantage of the announcement of its financial results for the third quarter of 2023 to announce a strengthened partnership with Samsung, and particularly its high-end products such as the future Galaxy S23.
It’s now official, Qualcomm has just confirmed that its Snapdragon chips will power Samsung flagships worldwide. An announcement concerning the Galaxy S23 series and “beyond”.
More Exynos processor in the Samsung Galaxy S23?
The rumor was insistent and has just been confirmed by Cristiano Amon, CEO of Qualcomm. A major agreement has just been signed between the American firm and its Korean partner. To a question posed on the subject during the announcement of the results of his company, Amon answers:
” The way you should think about it is that Snapdragon chips will power their Galaxy product line, their Galaxy flagships. VSWhat I can say at this point is that we were 75% on the Galaxy S22 before this agreement […] It will be more than this on the Galaxy S23 and beyond. It is a multi-year agreement […] Do you say that we will feed their devices globally. »
Today, the 25% of Galaxy S22 smartphones that are not equipped with the Snapdragon 8 Gen 1 chip have an Exynos 2200 SoC. Samsung’s chip offers satisfactory results, without ever reaching the level of Qualcomm’s SoC. An observation that some users have been able to make, especially in Europe. Indeed, Samsung has often chosen to offer its in-house chips on the Old Continent, leaving the American and Asian market to Qualcomm.
According to the statements of Cristiano Amon, this should change. However, this does not mean that 100% of the Galaxy S23 series smartphones will be equipped with the very promising Snapdragon 8 Gen 2. We will have to wait for more precise information on this subject, but the lesser use of Exynos chips in the high-end models is encouraging.
An agreement that does not only concern smartphones
The contract signed between the two companies is valid for the next seven years, until 2030. As the president and CEO of Qualcomm reminds us, the agreement does not only concern Galaxy smartphones, but also “Galaxy Books, PCs Windows, Galaxy tablets, future extended reality devices and other devices. It is therefore a very important agreement, which generates a lot of enthusiasm and which brings the two companies considerably closer together. »
An agreement on patent licenses for 3G, 4G, 5G and even 6G technologies has been reached for this same period. It is a strategic partnership for the two companies which thus intend to consolidate their places on the market. Samsung as a leader in mobile telephony and Qualcomm in wireless technologies and modem chips for mobile phones.
