Samsung phones degrade performance in 10,000 apps

Samsung has an app that reduces the performance of 10,000 popular apps on its phones. This is evident from recent revelations on a South Korean forum. This is the Game Optimization Services app installed on some Galaxy devices.

*Update 04/03: Samsung has issued a statement and we have added it to the article. We have also written in the text that the app is also available on phones with Dutch software.

Samsung Game Optimization Services

There is something wrong with a pre-installed app on some Samsung devices. According to findings on a South Korean Forum Samsung has an app that negatively affects the performance of other apps. The ‘Game Optimization Services’ (GOS) app is supposed to improve the performance of games, but it seems that the app also affects the performance of common apps in a negative way.

In a video a Youtuber tests the performance of various apps and it is noticeable in benchmarks that apps perform up to 56 percent worse on Samsung phones with CIS. A list of 10,000 apps affected by CIS has since been published. Examples of such apps are: Instagram, TikTok, Netflix, Microsoft Office, Google Keep, Spotify, Snapchat, YouTube Music. Certain Samsung apps are also part of the list, but notable absentees are the popular benchmark apps. So Samsung phones with CIS could never perform worse in benchmarks.

Why would Samsung do this?

The GOS app is also not installed on every Samsung phone. For example, she is not active on our Samsung Galaxy S22 Ultra, while some other news sites do notice the app. Several Androidworld readers have now confirmed that the app in question can also be seen on Dutch Samsung phones. A question you can ask yourself is why Samsung decreases the performance of apps. This is expected to achieve better battery performance on phones. Samsung would also not be the first manufacturer to reduce performance in apps, with the exception of benchmark apps. Such a practice has also been established with OnePlus phones before and OnePlus has now made reducing performance for better battery life something optional.

Statement by Samsung

According to an insiders at Samsung who naver could speak, Samsung is currently conducting an internal investigation into the effect of CIS on other applications. Samsung has responded to the findings in the Members app in South Korea. The text below is a rough translation from Korean:

“Hello, this is Samsung. We are always looking for more possibilities for users and want to offer them the most optimized user experience. GOS (Game Optimization Services) is pre-installed on the Galaxy S22 series to improve the performance of the processor and the GPU to optimize and prevent overheating during extended gaming sessions.”

“To address the new needs of users, we want to roll out an update in the Game Booster lab as soon as possible that allows them to choose whether or not to prioritize powerful performance. We will also commit afterwards to to ask about the satisfaction and well-being of users. Thank you.”

Do you have the ‘Game Optimization Services’ or ‘Game Optimization Services’ on your Samsung phone? Check the list of apps in the settings and let us know in the comments at the bottom of this article. You can also always share a screenshot with the editors via the road.

Thanks for the tips, Matthew!
