Search with Google Lens

Google Lens provides digital information about the real world. Point the camera at an object and the app will tell you what it is. Or translate a menu while on holiday.

With the Google Lens app, you can find out all kinds of information using the camera on the phone. This way you can digitally get more information about things in the real world. For this, the app works with previously taken photos, but can also work with live image. This gives you instant information about what the camera is pointing at.

Google Lens has a range of options. This is how the app translates texts. Great if you’re abroad and want to know what’s on a plate. Or point the camera at a menu to find out what’s in store. Another function is to explain. Point the camera at an object and Google Lens will tell you what you see in the frame and provide more information about it. You can also shop. Seen a nice chair in a coffee shop? Google Lens immediately tells you where this or a comparable chair is for sale. Finally, the app can also copy text. This way you can easily save an article from, for example, a magazine.

Google Lens is already on most phones with Android. If not, download the app from Google Play Store. iPhone or iPad owners can use Google Lens through the free Google app. Download it from the App Store. In addition, Google Lens is also incorporated into the Google Photos app. On some Android phones, Lens features have even been added to the device’s camera app.

There is no separate app from Google Lens for iPad/iPhone. All Lens features for these devices are in the Google app. Google Lens in the Google app is only available in English.

To open Google Lens on iPad/iPhone:

  • Tap the app google.
  • In the search bar, tap the “Google Lens” icon (the camera icon).
  • Tap ‘Open camera’.
  • At the very first tap OK to give Google permission to use the camera, among other things.

Google Lens opens, with all kinds of functions at the bottom.

To open Google Lens on Android device:

  • Tap the app Lens.
  • Google Lens opens. Tap the shutter button (the magnifying glass or camera icon) to search.

You can search for objects such as buildings, books and flowers via the live image.

  • Point the camera at an object.
  • The camera analyzes the object. Tap the blue or white circle that appears for more information.
  • If no circle appears, tap the magnifying glass.
  • The results are shown below. Tap one of them to learn more.

One of the best parts of Google Lens is translating ‘live’ texts. Can you really not make chocolate out of those French-language signs in the Paris metro? The app helps. Also useful if you want to have a Dutch text read to someone who does not speak Dutch.

Android:

  • Open the app.
  • Tap at the bottom left Translate.
  • Point the camera at text.
  • Google automatically recognizes the language and provides a translation on the screen, over the original text. Does this not happen or do you want to set a different language?
    • Tap the line Auto-detect (or the name of the language the app suggests) -> Dutch.
    • Scroll to the language you want to translate and tap it.
    • If you want to translate to English, tap Dutch.
    • Tap the language you want to translate to.

iPhone/iPad:

  • Open the app.
  • Tap at the bottom left Translate.
  • Point the camera at text.
  • Google automatically recognizes the language and provides a translation on the screen, over the original text. Does this not happen or do you want to set a different language?
    • Tap the line Auto-detect -> English.
    • Tap on Auto-detect.
    • Scroll to the language you want to translate and tap it.
    • If you want to translate to English, tap Dutch.
    • Tap the language you want to translate to.
    • Tap on To apply.

Google Lens not only recognizes objects, but also text. Copy and paste text from pictures or magazines so easily.

  • Open the app.
  • Tap the option Text.
  • Point the lens at a text.
  • Tap the selected text.
  • Drag the blue selection balls until the desired text is selected.
  • Tap one of the ‘Copy text’, ‘Listen’, ‘Translate’, ‘Search’ or ‘Copy to computer’ buttons.

Spotted someone with a nice jacket and know where you can buy it?

  • Tap the option Shop or Shopping.
  • Point the lens at an item.
  • Tap the dot that appears next to the object.
  • Tap one of the results.

Wondering what to order in a restaurant? Search dishes from the menu and view photos and reviews in Google Maps.

  • Tap on To dine or Food.
  • Tap on Select the restaurant.
  • Type the name of the restaurant and tap the correct restaurant.
  • Point the lens at the menu.
  • Tap the selected text.
  • Drag the blue selection balls until the desired text is selected.
  • Tap one of the results.

It is also possible to search from a previously taken photo.

  • Open Lens.
  • Tap the icon of a photo at the bottom left.
  • Tap a photo.
  • Tap the function you want to use (Android) or view the results (iPhone/iPad)
