At the beginning of this year, Honda recalled several years of the CBR1000RR, CBR600RR and the GL1800 GoldWing due to problems with the fuel pump. However, the problem appears to be much bigger, so a second recall has now been rolled out for several years of the CBR100RR and CBR600RR, and now also the VFR1200.
After receiving an initial report in early 2019 about four motorcycles in the United States that would not start after being removed from the crate by the dealer, Honda immediately started an investigation into the issue. Research showed that certain production series had a petrol pump installed whose impeller was not cast in accordance with specifications.
As a result, the material had too low a density. If the surface of a lower density impeller was exposed to solvent drying for a longer period of time during production, surface cracks could develop, with all the consequences that entails.
Investigation showed that the fuel pump in question was installed in three models: the 2018-2019 CBR1000RR, the 2018-2020 CBR600RR (which was not available in Europe) and the 2018-2020 GL1800 Goldwing. A recall was rolled out worldwide, but Honda quickly discovered that the affected range could be wider.
Additional research was then started, which indeed showed that many more units were involved. In the United States alone, this concerns 40,481 engines that can be returned to the dealer for a new fuel pump. According to Honda, about 1% have the defect.
This now concerns the 2007 CBR600RR with production dates from October 13 to December 25, 2006, the 2009-2017 CBR600RR with production dates from June 12, 2008 to June 26, 2017, the 2008 CBR1000RR with production dates from November 6, 2007 – March 19, 2008, the 2017 CBR1000RR with production dates from September 9, 2016 – September 7, 2017, the 2019 CBR1000RR with production dates from March 26, 2019, the 2021 CBR1000RR with production dates from November 9, 2020 – June 18, 2021, the 2010 VFR 1200 with production dates from July 28, 2009 – May 28, 2020 and finally the 2012-2013 VFR1200 with production dates from March 7, 2012 – December 13, 2012.
Honda emphasizes that it has not received any warranty claims and that the issue has not led to any incident.
