Second-hand electric car purchase subsidy halved

The cabinet will make 600 million euros available in the coming years to stimulate the purchase of (used) electric cars, it was announced yesterday. Nevertheless, the subsidy ‘per purchase’ of a used EV will be halved. Climate Minister Rob Jetten confirms this to Nieuwsuur.

After 2024, the SEPP subsidy scheme for the purchase of an electric car will cease to exist, but it was announced yesterday that there will also be a subsidy for buying an EV after next year. In the coming years, the cabinet will allocate 600 million euros to boost sales, with a focus on stimulating the purchase of second-hand electric cars. They would now be exported too often.

In that light, the news that Nieuwsuur uncovers is remarkable. In that program, Climate Minister Rob Jetten confirms that the subsidy amount per purchase will be halved, from €2,000 to €1,000. The idea is that more different people will be helped with the purchase of second-hand electric cars, which are expected to become increasingly cheaper.

At the moment, you can receive a €2,000 subsidy if you purchase a second-hand car with an original catalog value of no more than €45,000. This year, in 2023, the pot to stimulate electric second-hand sales contained €32.4 million, meaning that a total of 16,200 consumers can claim the €2,000 ‘discount’.

There should be a lot more after 2024. Reportedly, the pot with annual subsidy is growing in size, and twice as many people can be helped per €1 million, but with a 50 percent lower amount. This year and next year, the purchase subsidy for a second-hand EV will remain €2,000, but the number of people who can claim it is limited.
