Nissan has just presented the Townstar, its own version of the Renault Kangoo that will strengthen Nissan’s commercial vehicle range. The two larger delivery brothers of the new Townstar are renamed simultaneously. For the new naming of those two commercial vehicles, Nissan goes back to the past. That is striking.
Nissan’s commercial vehicle range now includes the all-new Townstar and its existing larger alternatives. Nissan has had the NV300 and NV400 on the menus for some time, respectively Nissan’s versions of the Renault Trafic and Renault Master. In order to better match those two company cars with the new Townstar in terms of naming, Nissan renames the NV300 Primastar and the NV400 is now called Interstar.

Those two model names sound new in 2021, but they are not. When Nissan first used the second-generation Renault Trafic as the basic name for its own version of that company car, the brand also called that car Primastar. We see something similar with the name Interstar, which Nissan stuck on its own version of the second-generation Renault Master launched in the late 1990s.

Nissan will soon announce more about the renewed commercial vehicle range in the Netherlands. We expect that the electric variant of the Townstar will eventually succeed the E-NV200 Van. The NV300 and NV400 also supplied in the Netherlands will undoubtedly also be renamed Primastar and Interstar respectively. Notably, Nissan is dusting off two old model names for the NV300 and NV400, but has named its new Kangoo-based commercial vehicle Interstar, not Kubistar. Kubistar was in fact the name of Nissan’s version of the first generation Renault Kangoo.
