Send files or photos along with an email on iPad or iPhone. You can add an attachment to a message with a few taps on the image.
What are attachments?
Attachments are files that you send with an email. An email can contain one attachment, but it can also be several files. An attachment can be anything. From a photo to a PDF or a Word file. The file is somewhere on your device and you send it via email to an email address. This can be an email address of a family member, friend or acquaintance. But you can also send attachments to your own e-mail address, for example to quickly transfer photos from your tablet to the PC.
Send attachment on iPhone and iPad
Here’s how to add an attachment on iPhone. The steps are the same on an iPad with iPadOS 15. If you have an older operating system on the iPad, skip to the next section.
- Tap the app Mail.
- Tap the new message icon at the bottom right (iPhone) or top right (iPad).
- The message box appears. Enter the sender’s email address in ‘To:’.
- Type a subject after ‘Subject:’.
- Tap an empty spot in the message.
A bar with six options will appear. Does the bar not appear on the screen? Then tap the arrow to the left in the gray bar above the keyboard.
Please note: the order of the buttons may differ for you.
1: With this button you change the format of the e-mail. This has nothing to do with attachments.
2: Tap this button to choose a photo from the Photos app. Tap the photo and it will be added to the email. You can tap multiple photos to include them in the mail. Tap the cross to close the photo overview.
3: This button opens the camera. Take a photo to send it directly with the email. If the photo is good, tap Use photo. otherwise tap Again.
4: Choose a document from the Files app to send with the message.
5: Use this option to scan a document with the iPhone’s camera. Bring up the page to be scanned in front of the camera and tap the white shutter button if the scan is not done automatically. In that case, drag the corners to the correct position and tap Preserve scan or Again if you want to better visualize the page. (If the camera does not recognize the page properly, it is better to take a photo and send it along.) If necessary, scan another page of the document. When you’re done, tap Keep and the scan is attached to the email.
6: This button opens a canvas or a previously added photo on which you can draw. The drawing can then be added to the email as an attachment. Make the drawing. In the case of a drawing on a photo that you had already attached: tap Ready. In the case of a drawing on a canvas: tap Done > Insert drawing to add it to the mail, or tap Delete changes to return to the message.
