How do you get your e-mail working on the tablet or smartphone? We explain it for the mail from your provider, for Gmail and for Outlook.com.
Provider Mail: POP vs IMAP
If you take out an internet subscription, you will receive an e-mail address from the provider. We call this provider mail. To set up your e-mail account on your tablet or smartphone, you need the so-called POP3 or IMAP data from the provider. These, together with your login details, ensure that you can e-mail. For a long time, POP3 was the most widely used. Gradually this is shifting to the newer IMAP. You can read more about the differences between POP3 and IMAP in the article ‘Switching from POP3 to IMAP’. Suffice it to say here that you should opt for IMAP. At least if your provider offers that. In this article we list all the setting options.
Preparations IMAP
Before you can transfer your provider’s e-mail account to your tablet or smartphone, you must have the following information to hand:
- The email address provided to you by the provider.
- The username provided to you by the provider (sometimes this is your email address, but not always).
- The password that goes with it.
- The address of the server handling the incoming mail.
- The address of the server that handles outgoing mail.
You have received all this information from your provider. As mentioned, not all providers support IMAP. Below is an overview of the servers that the major providers use. But check with the data that you have received from your provider whether it is still correct.

Set up IMAP
There are so many different tablets and smartphones around that it is impossible to discuss them all here. Fortunately, KPN has an excellent service that shows how setting up mail works for every brand and for every device.
KPN’s so-called telephone help works in the following way:
- Click below on the brand of device you have.
- Then click on your device. For example “Apple iPad Air 10.5 inch”.
- Then click E-mail > Set manually.
- Select your provider. In some cases, you can choose between IMAP or POP3, so be careful what you select. Services such as Gmail and Outlook.com are also included.
- Then go through all the steps, which are provided with handy pictures.
