Seven tips for driving in storms and strong winds

In the Netherlands it is more often windy. The storms even get names! On the road you also suffer from the strong wind. We give you tips for driving in storms and strong winds.

Driving in a storm does not have to be difficult at all, you have to keep your attention there. AutoWeek gives tips to arrive at your destination safely.

Keep more distance

If you are driving in a storm, or if there is a strong wind, your vehicle in front may do something unexpected. Or there’s something in the way. Keep your distance so you can respond better. Also give cyclists, moped riders and motorcyclists more space, they can make unexpected movements more easily when you drive past.

Adjust your speed

It is an extension of keeping your distance: you also have to adjust the speed when driving in storms and strong winds. The road may seem safer, but the chance of something unexpected happening is greater. If you drive less fast, then you are prepared for it.

Prepare yourself for unexpected movements

When driving in a storm, keep a good grip on the handlebars but remain flexible. That is the best way to, for example, feel the loss of the crosswind (or just feel the weather) when you drive past a truck, buildings or noise barrier. You will also be more affected by gusts of wind on a bridge or viaduct. Therefore, keep your distance if you pass a truck, bus or trailer with strong wind.

Do you have a high car, such as an SUV, van or trailer? Then be extra prepared for sudden crosswinds that suddenly get a hold of your car.

Driving in storm: watch out for rain

During a storm it often rains and sometimes the rainwater comes down in buckets. Then make sure you keep a good view and here again: adjust the speed and keep your distance. When there is a lot of water on the road, you also have to take into account poor visibility due to splashing water. Aquaplaning can also look around the corner here.

Ride with lights for better visibility

More and more cars have standard daytime running lights that make you more visible. If you are driving in strong winds, it is good to drive with low beam. Then you are more visible to other road users.

Don’t park under a tree

It may sound strange, but if possible choose a parking space that is not under a tree. Then you prevent your car from being hit by falling branches or worse, an entire tree that blows over. For damage due to natural conditions you must be insured at least WA Limited Casco, but you are of course not waiting for the hassle that comes with it.

Check the tire pressure

With good tire pressure you have the best grip on the road. You should always do it, but if you want to hit the road during a storm, it’s a good idea to check your tire pressure first. And then immediately check the profile depth. After all: with a profile of at least 3 mm, your chance of aquaplaning is considerably smaller.
