Rainfall causes problems

For the second time in a short time there are problems due to the large amount of recent rain. This now also has an effect on the road, because some roads in the east of the country are closed because there is too much water on them.
In the east and northeast of the country, major roads have been flooded due to heavy rainfall in recent days, the ANWB said. On Friday morning, the N345 from Zutphen to Apeldoorn and the N36 between Almelo and Ommen were even closed because there was too much water on the road surface. The N36 near Vriezenveen was also closed in both directions on Friday morning.
In some cases it can be resolved quickly and closures can still be over by Friday, but not everywhere it happens that quickly. For example, the N345 near Zutphen is closed in one direction and that road may remain closed until Tuesday. A spokeswoman for the province explains that there was 20 cm of water on the road on Thursday. This cannot be pumped away, because the area around the road is already completely saturated. So the water should drain naturally. The province frequently checks whether this is already happening and opens the road as soon as possible. Elsewhere in the country, no major roads are currently impassable due to water.
According to the spokeswoman, the water puddles may have arisen because the water cannot drain properly, or because it leaks onto the road from a higher viaduct, for example. It can be dangerous to drive through a large body of water at high speed and normally you are allowed to drive at 80 km/h on the relevant roads. It will freeze next weekend. That can make the situation even more dangerous. The ANWB is therefore extra alert to flooded roads.
