Sharing photos and videos with others, for example via social media, is fine, but be careful with it. Sharing on the internet is irrevocable.
Share photo online or not?
It’s so fun and easy today; share photos and videos of yourself or, for example, your grandchild. It can be done easily via WhatsApp, Facebook or YouTube. But always keep in mind who can see and forward the images. Because once others can view, save and forward a photo online, you no longer have control over what happens to it. Always keep the following in mind when sharing photos and videos.
Think what you share
Before sharing a photo, consider whether it is useful to show the content to others. Do the people in the photo look charming? Isn’t there too much to see naked? Is nobody’s privacy at stake? Because of course you don’t want that nice beach photo of your (grand) child to suddenly take on a completely different meaning because it has fallen into the wrong hands. And remember that employers often look up applicants on Facebook.
Pay attention to the privacy of others
Keep the privacy of others in mind. Don’t make fun of people with a photo. Furthermore, do not just post photos or videos on social media in which acquaintances appear. Not even your children or grandchildren. Maybe they don’t like seeing themselves on your Facebook page at all. Would you like to share a photo or video? Then ask the people in the picture if they like that.
Know who you are sharing with
Before sharing a photo (or video), always check who can view the image of you. Is that the whole world, for example because you are proud of your picture of a theater company? Or would you rather show your photo to only your friends or only to one specific person? Everything is possible. Sharing to a select group can be done on WhatsApp, for example, and making it public for the whole world can be done via Twitter and Facebook, for example.
Social media often has different privacy options. For example, on Facebook people can indicate that the content should not be visible to strangers. In this way, posted photos and videos can only be viewed by Facebook friends. Read more about this in the tip ‘Facebook posts only for friends’.
