Shut down and restart iPhone X (and newer devices)

The design introduced with the iPhone X changes the way you operate the device significantly. For example, turning off and restarting the iPhone X, XS, XR, 11 (Pro) and the iPhone 12 series works slightly differently than you are used to. iPhone show you how.

Turn off iPhone X, how do you do that?

Because the home button from the iPhone X is missing, a new way has been devised to turn off or restart the device. On previous iPhones, you could hold the side button to do this, but that action now activates Siri on the iPhone. That’s why Apple has come up with a different action to turn off the phone. It goes like this:

Turn off the iPhone X (and newer iPhones) in 4 steps:

  1. Press and hold the side button and one of the volume buttons for three seconds;

  2. The device vibrates and a new window appears;

  3. Slide the button with ‘turn off’ from left to right;

  4. The iPhone will then shut down.

To improve the accessibility of the iPhone, Apple has also incorporated the option in iOS to turn off the iPhone from the iPhone X. You only have to use the touchscreen and no more buttons are needed. To do this, go to ‘Settings> General’ and scroll down to turn off the smartphone.

Once the iPhone has shut down, you can restart it by pressing and holding the side button for a few seconds.
