Sixt buys more than 100,000 cars from BYD

Car rental company Sixt places a huge order with the Chinese car maker BYD. The first electric BYDs will be added to Sixt’s European rental fleet in the near future.

Thanks to Sixt, BYD appears to be off to a flying start in Europe. The originally German rental company immediately orders an unspecified fleet of ‘several thousand’ cars from BYD. This makes it one of the first European customers for BYD, which is also entering the rental market with this deal. The thousands of BYDs are all initially intended for European Sixt locations.

However, it does not stop at the first order, because after the first round, Sixt wants in principle to order another 100,000 cars. This will of course not be done in one fell swoop, but will be spread over the years between now and 2028. Sixt’s European fleet must be 70 to 90 percent electrified by 2030, a goal to which the BYDs will therefore contribute significantly. In addition to the already described deal, Sixt and BYD say they are also looking at expansion opportunities outside of Europe.

Sixt’s first BYD rental cars will be distributed across several European countries, including the Netherlands. It will initially be the BYD Atto 3. That comes as no surprise, because for the time being this is the BYD most suitable for the European market. During our first acquaintance, we were already surprised about the specially shaped, high-quality interior, so that’s a good thing. The first Atto 3s are to be delivered this year, including to Sixt locations.
