SkyActiv-X engine Mazda immensely popular

At the end of 2019, Mazda launched the SkyActiv-X, an innovative petrol engine with a combustion principle tried by many but not yet used by anyone. The motor turns out to be extremely popular in the Netherlands.

The SkyActiv-X is so special that Dutch legislation had to be adjusted for it. The ‘petrol self-igniter’ delivered 180 hp in its original form, much more than the 122 hp SkyActiv-G that was the only petrol alternative in the Mazda 3 when it was introduced.

It now appears that the SkyActiv-G is barely participating in the Netherlands. In the last six months of the Mazda 3, no less than 85.5 percent of buyers opted for the SkyActiv-X, leaving 14.5 percent for the ‘G’. With the CX-30, the share of the SkyActiv-X is even greater: in 2020 no less than 94 percent of buyers went for it.

That is significant, because the mid-sized CX-30 has already become the most popular Mazda in the Netherlands in its short career. A total of 2,212 units were sold in 2020, 2,086 of which with the 180 hp SkyActiv-X.

Mazda 3 2021

The special Mazda engine is now called e-SkyActiv-X and has 6 extra horsepower. In 2021, 100 percent of the CX-30s will be equipped with that engine so far, although that does not say everything shortly after the introduction of that power source and at the beginning of the year.

It is not surprising that many 3 and CX-30 buyers opt for the SkyActiv-X. At the introduction, the additional price of the SkyActiv-X compared to the SkyActiv-G was limited to € 950. This has now risen to € 1,100 for a Mazda 3 and € 1,250 for the CX-30, but that is still a good one. deal. After all, for that money you not only get 64 hp extra, but also a car that is at least on paper a bit more economical than the SkyActiv-G variant.
