The Chinese manufacturer of devices such as smartphones and tables Xiaomi wants to build electric cars. This is evident from reports from Reuters and various Chinese media.
The rise of the electric car makes it attractive on paper for various companies that are not traditionally a car manufacturer to also develop and produce it. There have been rumors for years that Apple will bring its own car, vacuum cleaner manufacturer Dyson had ambitious plans to produce EVs and the Chinese electronics and IT giant Huawei also appears to be working on an electric car. The Chinese manufacturer of smartphones and tablets Xiaomi has now added to that list of companies.
Reuters, which relies on three sources that would be close to Xiaomi, writes that the Chinese tech giant Xiaomi is sitting around the table with the also Chinese car manufacturer Great Wall about the use of one of Great Wall’s factories. Xiaomi wants to build electric cars where it sticks its own logos. Whether it will be completely self-developed cars or whether Xiaomi will adjust existing products from Great Wall is not yet certain. The latter is more likely.
While both Xiaomi and Great Wall have neither confirmed nor debunked the rumors, the two companies would soon announce a partnership, according to Reuters. Xiaomi is not a complete stranger in the world on wheels. In the form of the Ninebot GoKart Pro, the company has an electric kart in its portfolio, a tear nose where the company even has entered into a partnership with Lamborghini.
The rumors about the possible collaboration between Xiaomi and Great Wall has in any case not harmed the stock market value of the two companies. On the contrary. Xiaomi rose 9 percent in value on the Hong Kong stock exchange. Great Wall Motor even became worth 10 percent more.
