The solar breathing should relax and activate you at the same time and increase your energy level. You can find out how the breathing technology works and what it really brings.

The solar breathing is also known in yoga under the term Surya Bhedana Pranayama. It should wake you awake and activate your body and mind. So it is best to run it in the morning. But solar breathing also has healing effects in other times of the day.

Here we explain how you carry out the breathing technology and what effect you can expect.

Solar breathing: that’s how it works

For solar breathing, you only need a comfortable space to sit or lie or lie and comfortable clothing. Then you can start:

  1. Close your eyes. Breathe deeply through the nose and out through the mouth.
  2. Now close your left nostril with the ring finger.
  3. Breathe deeply and slowly through the right nostril.
  4. Hold your breath for a few seconds. You can count up to five or eight.
  5. Now close your right nostril with the thumb.
  6. Slowly breathe out through the left nostril.
  7. Repeat the breathing exercise about five times.

Are solar breathing and exchange breathing the same?

In the conception of the so -called exchange breathing, a further breathing technique of the pranayama is similar.

But be careful: in the case of solar breathing, you only breathe in through the right nostril and you only breathe out through the left. When changing the exchange, you alternate with the inner and exhalation between the two nostrils. After yoga teaching, however, the activating solar energy flows over the right nostril. In the case of solar breathing, you should therefore only concentrate on this page.

The fact that activating breathing air actually flows through the right nostril is not scientifically proven. However, numerous research show that deep breathing exercises have a positive effect on body and mind in different ways:

  • According to the magazine spectrum, we can deliberately control our vegetative nervous system via breathing. If we breathe in and out deeply, areas in the brain are activated that have a calming effect on us. This reduces our heart rate and blood pressure. Even tense muscles loosen and our well -being increases.
  • In a study review from 2018, researchers summarized 68 studies on yoga actions. According to the results of the studies, the breathing techniques have a positive impact on the heart and lungs and help to reduce stress. The mood can therefore also be improved by yoga actions. Even with some diseases and as an accompanying measure of chemotherapy, breathing techniques proved to be healing.

The solar breathing is usually correct. Netdoktor also confirms that breathing exercises can be beneficial for everyone. In particular, people who are strongly stressed would benefit from calming breathing techniques. However, if you have just been cold and do not get air through a nostril, the solar breathing is at least for a short time for you. Then you should better fall back on breathing exercises where you can inhale and exhale through both nostrils.
