Sonic, spatial sound in Windows 10

Windows 10 Sonic provides virtual surround sound through the headphones

Windows 10 has a nice feature – for those who love it – on board: Sonic. It is an option intended to hear spatial sound through your headphones.

If you want a bit more depth in the sound you hear through your headphones in Windows 10, you can. Windows 10 has a technology on board called Sonic for headphones (or headphones). Of course, such tricks have been in use for many longer with various sound card and chip manufacturers, but in Windows 10 it has become a standard part that works independently of the sound card used. Not everyone appreciates the artificial 3D sound through these kinds of tricks, if only because not everyone really fools his or her brain. In short: just try to see if what you hear sounds convincing to you. If so: beautiful! Not? Shut down quickly of course.

Activate

Basically, you activate Sonic for headphones by clicking with the right mouse button on the speaker icon at the bottom right of the system toolbar. A menu will open, including the option Spatial sound. Click on this and you will see if you are a bit lucky you can enable Sonic there. However, make sure to plug in your headphones first or you may not see this option at all! Also, the option is not available, for example, in some way configured virtual machines, or remote desktops.

Incidentally, if desired, Dolby Atmos surround sound can also be added to Windows 10. The operation is very similar to that of Sonic, only you are expected to pay for Atmos. Start the Windows Store and search for it Dolby Access. After installation you can enjoy Atmos for free for a month, after which you have to pay. In short: Sonic is – certainly to start with – more interesting.

You can add Dolby Atmos via the (paid) Dolby Access app, which can be found in the Windows Store
