Sounds on iPad and iPhone

Sounds on iPad and iPhone Sounds from the iPad/iPhone can be useful, for example when you receive an email or text message. But not all sounds of the device are appreciated, remember the keyboard sounds. Set when your device makes which sound. The steps apply to iPads and iPhone with iOS 11 or later.

On the side of the iPad and iPhone are physical buttons to adjust the volume. With the iPad you will find these buttons on the right side at the top of the device. The upper knob increases the volume of the sound effects and lowers the volume with the lower one. On the iPhone, there are two buttons on the left side of the device. Here, too, the upper knob raises the volume of the sound effects, and lowers the lower knob.

Do you find the use of these volume buttons inconvenient, for example because you accidentally adjust the volume? Then you can set that the buttons no longer adjust the volume.

  • Tap on Institutions > Hear and feel (iPhone) or Sounds (iPad).
  • Under ‘Ringtone and notifications’, drag the slider behind ‘Edit with buttons’ to the left.

You can no longer use the volume buttons to adjust the ringer and notification volume. However, you can still use the slider under ‘Ringtone and notifications’ in this menu to adjust the volume.

On an iPad and iPhone, you can get notifications. You will then hear a sound as soon as you receive a call, receive a text message or e-mail or if there is something in your agenda. Set the sound you hear with these different notifications.

  • Tap on Institutions > Hear and feel (iPhone) or Sounds (iPad).
  • Under ‘Sounds’ (iPad) or ‘Sounds and Vibration Patterns’ (iPhone) you will find all possible notifications with which you can adjust the sound.
  • Tap the desired notification, for example ringtone.
  • Tap a ringtone or notification tone. You hear the sound.
  • If it is to your liking, you don’t need to do anything more. Would you like a different tone? Then tap one of the other tones.
  • Don’t want to hear any sound with one of these notifications? Instead of a notification tone, you can also tap at the top of the list No. This is only not possible with ‘Ringtone’.

On iPhone, you can change the default ringtone using the instructions above. But you can also give specific people a different ringtone. This way you immediately know who is calling when you hear the ringtone.

  • Tap on Contacts.
  • Tap a contact.
  • Tap at the top right of the screen Change.
  • Tap on Ringtone Default.
  • Tap the desired ringtone.
  • Tap on Ready and until iOS 14 again on Ready.

The iPhone also has a flash next to the camera on the device. This flash can also be used for purposes other than taking pictures. For example, you can set the flash to fire with a notification. This can be useful if you don’t hear the notification sound or have it turned off.

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Accessibility.
  • Tap on Audiovisual.
  • Drag the button behind ‘LED flash on notification’ to the right.

By default, the lock and keyboard sounds are turned on on the iPad and iPhone. When the device turns on or off, you will hear the lock sound. And when the keyboard sound is on, you’ll hear a tap with every touch on the keyboard. That can be annoying for you and those around you.

You can turn off both sounds as follows:

  • Tap on Institutions.
  • Tap on Hear and feel.
  • Drag the slider behind ‘Lock sound’ and/or ‘Keyboard click’ to the left.
