Do you enjoy listening to music while running? Good news! You can now turn on songs hands-free thanks to the new Siri support for Spotify on the Apple Watch. That is how it works.
Siri Spotify support for Apple Watch now available
Spotify has updated the iOS app to add Siri support for the Apple Watch. This allows you to turn on music with a voice command. The feature only works on Apple Watches running watchOS 6. At the end of last year, Spotify already announced Siri support for the iPhone and iPad.
Here’s how to turn on Siri Spotify support for Apple Watch:
- Make sure your Apple Watch is running on watchOS 6 and download the latest version of Spotify;
- Grab your watch and say “Hey Siri, play [album/artiest/afspeellijst] on Spotify ”;
- Optionally, grant Siri permission to use Spotify data;
- You should hear music now.

You only have to give the permission once. Have you listened to Spotify via Siri before? Then you can probably skip this step: after all, the permission has already been granted. You can also use Spotify hands-free with AirPods, the HomePod or in combination with CarPlay.
Get more from Spotify
Siri has always been a closed area for third-party app developers. When you asked to play a song through a music service other than Apple Music, you couldn’t get home. Since iOS 13, this policy has been relaxed. For example, in October of 2019, Spotify already announced that their app could now be operated hands-free with Siri.
Most Spotify listeners can play a song and create a playlist, but the music service has more to it. Check out our Spotify tips article for an overview of useful functions, or watch the video below. A good example is Sleep Timer. This allows you to fall asleep while enjoying your favorite music.
