With Spotify it is possible to listen to music while you are offline, i.e. without an internet connection. That’s how you do that.
Spotify: this is how you listen to music while you’re offline
There are several reasons why you might want to listen to Spotify offline. You may want to limit your data usage. Or you are in a place where there is no internet, or where internet is not allowed. Like on an airplane. If you take this into account in advance, you won’t have to miss your favorite music at all.
The prerequisite for using Spotify offline is that you have a paid subscription have. The free version of Spotify does not allow you to save music for offline use.
Download albums and playlists
Take out a subscription if you haven’t already done so. Then make sure you are connected to a WiFi network. Then follow the next steps to download your favorite music.
- Open Spotify and make sure you are logged in;
- Go to the playlist or album you want to download;
- Tap the ‘down arrow’;
- Wait for the download to complete.
If you want to remove the download for offline use in Spotify, tap the ‘down arrow’ again. In the screen that then appears, tap ‘Delete’. Another option is to tap the three dots next to the arrow. You will then see some more options, such as ‘Remove from Library’ and ‘Download to Apple Watch’.
Spotify: Listen to music offline
To play the music you’ve downloaded from Spotify for offline use, go to the ‘Library’ tab within Spotify. You will see a ‘Downloaded’ button somewhere at the top. Tap that and the folder containing all the music you’ve downloaded will open. Playback continues as usual.
If you want to be sure that you only play music offline in Spotify that you have downloaded, even when you are connected to the internet, then do the following.
- Open Spotify and tap the ‘Library’ tab;
- Tap your own photo at the top left;
- Tap ‘Settings & Privacy’ then ‘Playback’;
- Enable the ‘Offline’ option.
Audio quality and storage space
The more music you download to Spotify to play offline, the more storage space you take up. The same goes for higher audio quality. Depending on the amount of storage space you have, you may want to adjust that audio quality. This can be done in the following way:
- Open Spotify and tap the ‘Library’ tab;
- Tap your own photo at the top left;
- Tap ‘Settings & Privacy’ and then ‘Audio Quality’;
- Scroll down and adjust the quality under ‘Download’.
