New, used or not at all?
Both new and used cars are becoming more and more expensive, but a car in front of the door is of course so nice. That can be a new electric one, or just a car with a combustion engine. And who says new is always better? Maybe next year you will step into a young used middle class car, or at least in that youngtimer that you have had your eye on for years. It is therefore high time for the following statement: ‘I will buy another car in 2023’.
Used car prices are skyrocketing. For example, a second-hand car on AutoScout24.nl costs an average of more than €24,000. That does not mean, of course, that there is nothing suitable to be found for less money. In general, new cars are of course even more expensive than used cars, but here too you can go as crazy as you want.
There are various arguments that can be made to decide whether or not to buy a new car. Nowadays, a new car often offers conveniences such as Apple CarPlay and Android Auto connectivity, adaptive or non-adaptive cruise control and numerous passive and active safety systems that you would have never heard of ten years ago. In addition, a new car may give you the feeling of security. You feel that the chance that something breaks down is smaller than with a used car. If something breaks, you can of course rely on the warranty. However, the moment you leave the dealer’s premises with your new acquisition, you have already been bitten by the monster of depreciation.
Fortunately, there is the second-hand market! For often much less money than you pay for a new car, you get into a young used car that is often still quite fresh, and with which the chance of technical defects is not that great. Are you just attached to a certain model that has not been sold for years? The second-hand market also offers a solution in that case. There is something for every budget. From beautiful youngtimers to classics and from smart and affordable city cars from a few to decades old to supercars or forgotten home-garden-and-kitchen models.
