Stellantis also goes on the LFP battery

After Tesla and Ford, Stellantis also wants the LFP battery. When exactly is not yet known. It is clear that it will happen, especially with a view to the European market.

Will LFP batteries become all the rage in EV land? Well, the benefits of it are already becoming clear at Tesla and Ford also sees the point in it. Now Stellantis has also tacked. CEO Carlos Tavares has, according to Automotive News let investors know that the lithium iron phosphate batteries will eventually be in European cars of the group. That means that brands such as Peugeot, Fiat and Opel can look forward to it.

The reason to go for LFP is relatively simple. “We need LFP because it makes it cost-effective to build affordable cars for the middle class,” said Tavares. So it is simply cheaper. The ingredients of LFP batteries are less expensive than, for example, those of the now widely used NMC lithium-ion batteries. A disadvantage is that LFP batteries are less powerful, but at the same time Tesla would prove that it is safer to charge the batteries directly to 100 percent full without causing excessive damage to the battery.

Stellantis has yet to announce not only when it will start using LFP batteries, but also where it will source these batteries. According to Tavares, that has not yet been decided. Tesla buys them from the Chinese CATL. Ford also has a partnership with it, but will produce the batteries in its own battery factory in the US.
