Stellantis and LG Energy Solutions have signed a framework agreement in which the two companies indicate that they want to build a battery factory in the United States. The factory should open its gates in early 2024.
Stellantis has set a goal of having 40 percent electrified vehicles in its cars sold in the United States by 2030. For the required batteries, Stellantis enters into a partnership with LG Energy Solutions. The two companies have indicated that they will set up a joint venture for the construction of a battery factory with an annual production capacity of 40 GWh.
The batteries produced at the new plant will be sent to Stellantis plants in the United States, Canada and Mexico where they will be installed in all-electric models and plug-in hybrids. Stellantis and LG are no strangers to each other in North America. Fiat Chrysler Automobiles, which was incorporated in Stellantis, has been collaborating with the then LG Chem battery manufacturer since 2014 for the supply of batteries for the plug-in hybrid Chrysler Pacifica Hybrid. It is not yet known where the battery factory will be built. Stellantis does say that construction of the factory will be completed in the second quarter of 2022.
