Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz are going to make batteries together

Joint venture ‘Automotive Cells Company’ gets extra partner

Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz are going to make batteries together

Stellantis and Mercedes-Benz join forces to produce batteries. Stellantis announces that. Mercedes-Benz becomes a new partner in the Automotive Cells Company (ACC) joint venture. In addition to battery factories in France and Berlin, a third battery factory in Italy is now planned.

ACC was founded in 2020 by Stellantis and Total with the aim of producing batteries in Europe. Mercedes-Benz is now joining the table as a partner in the joint venture and will own a third of the shares, the same as Stellantis and Total. Mercedes-Benz in turn provides technology and knowledge about battery production to ACC. With the entry of a third partner, ACC’s objectives also increase. By 2030, the annual production capacity must be at least 120 GWh. For the already planned factories in France and Germany, the expected annual battery production will increase from 24 GWh to 40 GWh per factory.

Those two factories, which will be located in Douvrin and Kaiserslautern, have not yet been built. ACC wants to start production in France next year, with the factory in Germany to be opened in 2025. A third factory will be added in Italy. Sources previously reported that Stellantis planned to build a ‘gigafactory’ in southern Italy, now the group has confirmed this itself. For the battery factory, ACC will convert Fiat’s existing factory in Termoli, where the brand currently screws together engines and transmissions. In total, the three battery factories involve an investment of more than €7 billion.

It is not yet clear when the factory in Italy will be built. ACC is currently in talks with the Italian government to finalize the deal.
