Stellantis to build battery factory in Canada

Stellantis and LG Energy Solution embrace each other and together they invest just under 3 billion euros in the construction of a brand new battery factory. The new production facility will be located in Canada and will be the country’s first major battery factory.

Stellantis and LG Energy Solutions have signed the latest papers that will allow the start of a new battery factory. The partnership between Stellantis and LG Energy Solutions is investing 2.9 billion euros in the new factory, which will be located near the city of Windsor in the province of Ontario.

The first pile will be driven into the ground later this year. The new factory is to be commissioned in the first quarter of 2024. The new battery factory has an annual production capacity of ‘more than 45 GWh’ and is expected to create 2,500 new workplaces.

Stellantis has set itself the goal of selling five million electric cars annually by 2030. In Europe, the group wants to sell only electric cars in the long term. In the United States and Canada, half of the sales mix of commercial vehicles and passenger cars should consist of EVs by that time. The group will soon be able to produce 400 GWh of batteries spread over five factories.
