Storm Pia causes dangerous situations on the road

Storm Pia is moving across the country and is causing quite a bit of misery on various roads and highways. Trees were blown onto the road in several places. Rijkswaterstaat warns motorists that it can be really treacherous.

Rijkswaterstaat receives several reports of fallen trees on highways, such as on the A1 near Barneveld. Traffic is being diverted while the fallen trees are removed. The A1 near Barneveld is now free again, the service reports on A truck was blown over on the A32 near Leeuwarden and Heerenveen, the ANWB reports on X. The road is therefore closed between Akkrum and the Heerenveen junction. Since the morning there have been several incidents of threatened or actual fallen trees on highways, the ANWB previously reported on X. As a result, there were already delays on the road, for example in the Amsterdam area.

Motorists must be extra alert in strong winds and adjust their driving style, Rijkswaterstaat warns. For example, drivers must keep extra distance from vehicles in front and be aware of objects that could be blown onto the road by strong winds. They must also take into account evasive maneuvers by vehicles in front. Vehicles with a trailer, full or empty, trucks without a load, caravans and motorcyclists are “extra vulnerable in strong winds”. “It may be wise to postpone the trip,” the traffic service advises.
