Anyone who thinks of potent Subaru’s will soon see heavily sprained Impreza’s GT Turbo or WRX’s and STI. Big brother Legacy is also available in various potent flavors. The B4s of the third generation Subaru Legacy may appeal the most to fans of Japanese power sedans. Thanks to Techzle reader and former intern Bart Vergeer, we have a beautiful 2003 Subaru Legacy B4 on the digital stage of In het Wild today.
Subaru delivered the fourth generation Legacy, just like the generation before, with a 3.0-liter six-cylinder boxer engine, a machine that produced 245 hp in the Legacy 3.0R delivered between 2004 and 2009. The third generation Legacy, produced between 1998 and 2004, was available in even spicier flavors, but not in the Netherlands. In our country, the Legacy buyer could opt for 125 hp and 156 hp 2.0 and 2.5 four-cylinder boxer engines and who was in the market for the then current Legacy Outback could also get a 209 hp 3.0 six-cylinder boxer engine. Turbo machines were foreign to the third generation of Legacy here, but not outside the Dutch borders. The Legacy had various sporty B4 versions, cars that are occasionally brought to the Netherlands and of which this beautiful-looking black copy is a perfect example.
The Legacy’s B4 existed depending on the market where they were delivered with various engines, although it was always a Legacy Sedan. In addition to the 157 hp B4 RS & TS-R with a turbo-free 2.0, the 172 hp B4 RS25 with naturally aspirated 2.5 and the 223 hp RS30 and GT30s, the most powerful Legacy’s B4 had a double-blown four-cylinder boxer engine under the hood. Petrol engines with two turbos that in Australia in combination with a manual gearbox 258 hp and with automatic transmission 239 hp to all four wheels. In Japan those 2.0s were even more powerful, there the B4 RSK and B4 baptized Legacy’s kicked it in combination with a manual gearbox and thanks to petrol with 100 octane on paper even up to 280 hp. The Legacy in these photos has, according to its license plate registration, a 280 hp 2.0 under the hood, enough to help the 1,450 kilo sedan in a second or 5.5 at a speed of 100 km / h.
The Legacy B4 in these photos looks particularly fresh and has only been in the Netherlands since the second half of 2020. The rear bumper of this black copy seems to come from a Legacy Blitzen, a special limited edition of the Legacy was created in collaboration with none other than Porsche (photo 6).
