Subaru shows electric sports coupe of the near future

Electric successor to BRZ?

Subaru shows electric sports coupe of the near future

The news from Japan is currently hitting the wall and Subaru is also making an interesting contribution. This is shown by the Sport Mobility Concept, a not so inspiring name for a quite striking study model.

The Japan Mobility Show has started and that has triggered a huge flow of news from Japanese brands. Of course, Subaru will also be present in Tokyo. That puts – in addition to a kind of cross between a car and a drone (the Air Mobility Concept) and some Japanese versions of the Levorg, Solterra, Forrester and Crosstrek – this special Sport Mobility Concept on the exhibition floor. Of course this is the big crowd pleaser and it’s not hard to see why. After all, the Sport Mobility Concept is a completely new appearance, with a design language that we are not yet familiar with from the brand.

The fairly sleek Sport Mobility Concept combines sharp creases and corners with slightly smoother lines along the flanks. The roof, which is also quite smoothly lined, almost looks like one large glass dome, although we can still see a somewhat hidden B-pillar. As seems to be the norm these days, the concept car is also a bit high above the ground for a sporty model. Yet we don’t really get a crossover feeling; especially diagonally from the front, it is primarily a sports coupe. A nice detail are the ‘highlights’ towards the center of the nose. That seems to be a subtle reference to Subaru’s rally guns.

We don’t know much about the Subaru Sport Mobility Concept yet, except that it is fully electric and of course four-wheel drive. According to Subaru, sporty driving and driving pleasure are central to this car. The brand makes no mention of matters such as sustainability or efficiency. No, it’s about experience and enjoyment. Refreshing. It now remains to be seen what the Japanese may have in mind, although we can already imagine a production model as a successor to the BRZ later this decade.

And what about the Toyota GR86? Well, it could be that Toyota and Subaru will each follow their own path after this BRZ/GR86 generation. Subaru recently indicated that it wants to introduce more of its own electric models. There will only be electric SUVs until 2026, and another four models will be added by the end of 2028. Perhaps the production version of this Sport Mobility Concept will be among those four.
