Subsidy applications for new electric cars are lagging behind

What about the SEPP subsidy? How much subsidy budget is there and how many new and used electric cars is there still room for?

Subsidy applications for new electric cars are lagging behind

Dutch private individuals are still finding their way to the SEPP subsidy pot for more than six months. The trend that claims for a financial contribution for the purchase of a used electric car are now significantly more frequent does not appear to be short-lived. This is evident from our monthly analysis of the figures.

The SEPP subsidy pot that the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) has available this year to boost the sale of electric cars is divided into two parts, just like last year. A part is available to boost the sale or private lease of a new electric car and a part is reserved to financially support Dutch people who want to buy a used electric car. The part reserved for new electric cars initially emptied faster than the part for second-hand EVs, but this has changed in recent months. Likewise now.

Used electric car

Of the €99.4 million available this year in purchase subsidies for electric cars, €32.4 million is intended to stimulate the sale or private lease of used electric cars. Those who want to buy a second-hand EV with an original catalog value (tax price) of up to €45,000 can benefit from a €2,000 purchase subsidy. Of that €32.4 million, €17.9 million has now been forgiven. This means that 55 percent of the SEPP subsidy for used electric cars has now been forgiven. Last month around this time, that percentage was almost 48 percent. The SEPP subsidy pot for used EVs has decreased by 7.4 percentage points in one month. A purchase subsidy has now been applied for for 8,950 electric used cars. There is still €14.5 million budget left, good for another 7,250 used electric cars.

New electric car

Of course, the amount in the subsidy pot for new electric cars has also shrunk, but relatively not as fast as that for used electric cars. Of the €67 million available this year, €27.44 million has now been forgiven. So 41 percent. Last month around this time, that percentage was 37 percent. That’s about a 4 percentage point difference.

You can receive a financial contribution of €2,950 on the purchase of a new electric car with a catalog value of up to €45,000. This year, purchase subsidies have been applied for for around 9,300 new EVs. There is still €39.56 million available (59 percent), good for another 13,410 new electric cars.

If we look at the complete subsidy pot of €99.4 million, we see that there is still €54.06 million (64 percent) left. A total of €45.34 million in subsidy has been applied for for the purchase of a new or used electric car this year (46 percent).

Subsidy in 2024?

In 2024 you can also apply for a subsidy for the purchase of a new or used electric car. As far as we know, this is the last year in which the subsidy scheme has existed. In 2024, the purchase subsidy will be further reduced. Next year you will receive €2,550 as a contribution on the purchase of a new electric EV. The purchase subsidy for used electric vehicles will remain at €2,000 until 2024. This incentive scheme will also end in 2025.
