Subsidy pot for second-hand electric cars almost empty

SEPP subsidy still available for fewer than 1,500 used EVs

Subsidy pot for second-hand electric cars almost empty

Are you in the market for a used electric car and would you like to benefit from a purchase subsidy? Then be quick. The subsidy pot containing SEPP cents to encourage the purchase of a second-hand electric car is almost empty. There is no budget available for 1,500 second-hand EVs.

It has been clear for months now that subsidy applications are submitted significantly more often for the purchase or private lease of a second-hand electric car than for a new one. Also in October, the subsidy pot to make the purchase of a used electric car more attractive became empty considerably faster than the pot that should encourage the purchase of a new EV. So fast, in fact, that there is less than ten percent left.

Used electric car

Of the €32.4 million that was made available this year by the Netherlands Enterprise Agency (RVO) to encourage the purchase or private lease of second-hand electric cars with an original fiscal value (list price) of up to €45,000, has now been €29.47 million forgiven. This means that 91 percent of this pot is now empty. On October 3 – just under a month ago – that percentage was still 80.2 percent. This means that the subsidy pot for second-hand EVs has been depleted by 11 percentage points in just under four weeks.

SEPP subsidies have now been applied for for 14,735 second-hand electric cars. On October 3, that number was still 12,985 units. In just four weeks, a subsidy application was submitted for 1,750 used EVs. There is still €2.93 million (9 percent) available, good for 1,465 used electric cars. With the speed at which things are being emptied now, the subsidy pot will be empty before the end of November. You can receive a compensation of €2,000 on a second-hand electric car.

New electric car

As is now known, the eagerness with which the SEPP subsidy fund for used EVs is used is not in proportion to the speed with which subsidies are applied for new electric cars with a tax value of up to €45,000. Of the €67 million made available this year, only €35.96 million has been allocated at the time of writing. So just under 54 percent. About four weeks ago – on October 3 – this percentage was still 49.3 percent. In just under a month, this significantly larger subsidy pot has been depleted by only 4.4 percent.

At the time of writing, a SEPP subsidy has been applied for for 12,190 new electric cars with a list value of up to €45,000. On October 3, that number was still 11,203 units. Over the past four weeks, a subsidy budget has been requested for 987 new EVs. There is still €31.04 million available (46 percent), good for another 10,522 applications.

Of the total subsidy pot of €99.4 million, €65.43 million (66 percent) has been allocated. There is still €33.97 million available (34 percent).

Subsidy for electric cars in 2024

Initially, the subsidy on the purchase of a new electric car would be reduced by €400 to €2,550 in 2024. That’s not going to happen. You can also apply for a €2,950 purchase subsidy on a new electric car in 2024. Just like this year, the subsidy you can receive on a used electric car in 2024 will be €2,000.
