Finally on an equal footing with the rest

Successor Opel Crossland will be freshly traditional – Preview

The Opel Crossland is already quite old. It is time for innovation, especially in the technical field, and Opel is working hard on this. The successor will again be a fairly traditional SUV, but one with a fresh design and on a basis that finally puts it on an equal footing with many Stellantis family members.

Highlights

  • Just like the Crossland, it has a traditional shape
  • Also fully electric
  • On a newer basis

Even before Opel was acquired by Groupe PSA, the two parties were already working together. This led to the arrival of the Opel Crossland Handy for Opel that it could turn to the French, you might say, but the Crossland X was a bit of an afterthought. After all, the PF1 base on which he was enthroned was already elderly. Not long after the arrival of the Crossland Ultimately, Opel would also use that basis with the Corsa and the Mokka and that only made it even more clear how the Crossland was somewhat lagging behind. A fairly major facelift in 2020, in which the Crossland somewhat artificially received the Vizor grille of newer Opels and lost the X in its name, could not change that. So time for a successor. One that fits in a little more with the rest of the family.

Also electric

The most important change in the successor to the Crossland is – not entirely surprising – the platform on which it stands. Yes, Opel’s traditional compact SUV will finally be based on the e-CMP base that the Corsa and Mokka have been using for some time. This means that the successor uses well-known technology and that there will also be a fully electric version. Count on the most recent hardware, so a 156 hp electric motor and a battery pack with a gross capacity of 54 kWh. The Crossland successor will probably have a driving range of about 400 km with a full battery. Would you rather not use the plug yet? Undoubtedly, the well-known 1.2 PureTech petrol power sources will also be used, although it remains to be seen whether these will also be included in the Dutch price list.

The Crossland appeals to the fairly traditional buyer; Opel already has the Mokka for the ‘hipper’ customer. It seems that the new model will also be placed in that role. After all, it also has a fairly traditionally shaped carriage. However, it will all be a bit more modern than the current Crossland. The latest evolution of Opel’s Vizor grille is now seamlessly incorporated into the basic design and at the rear we even expect a look that already makes the Corsa and Mokka look somewhat outdated. The successor to the Crossland may be Opel’s first model that clearly reflects style elements from the recently presented Opel Experimental. You can also count on a fairly tidy interior, which is reminiscent of that of the Mokka and Corsa, but is a bit more modern.

Other name?

You may have noticed that so far we are talking about the ‘successor of’ and not about ‘the new Crossland’. Opel itself is not talking about the next Crossland and that suggests that a different name will be printed on it. We expect to welcome Opel’s youngest member in the course of next year.
