Suzuki has issued a recall for the Burgman 400. The fuel hose may come into contact with the breather hose, causing friction. In the worst case, the fuel hose can be abraded to the point where fuel leaks from the hose.
Suzuki Motor Corporation received an initial report from a foreign distributor that the fuel hose of a Burgman (AN400) was damaged and fuel was leaking. The damaged fuel hose was collected and sent to Suzuki for evaluation.
The collected fuel hose was inspected, and the portion of the metal fuel pipe that connects to the fuel tank was found to be bent upward at an improper angle causing the fuel hose to contact an adjacent vent hose.
Wear had occurred between these two hoses, with the jacket of the breather hose wearing through the jacket of the fuel hose and into the fuel hose itself, resulting in fuel leakage.
Suzuki restarted its investigation into the prevention of inappropriate bending of the metal connecting pipes, the degree of deformation, and the clearance between the fuel hose and breather hose. This issue was first observed on June 6, 2024, on a unit purchased for internal development testing.
Suzuki found that the two pipes had also made contact with this unit, although in this case the damage was limited to only the protective sheathing of the hose. Based on this finding, Suzuki did not believe a safety issue existed.
The cause of the incorrect shape of the metal pipes was also investigated and found to be the result of an installation error by a production line worker. This condition was resolved on June 10, 2024, through employee training. Because over time the fuel hose could chafe, Suzuki decided to roll out a recall at the beginning of December.
The recall concerns the Burgman 400 models produced between September 15, 2022 and June 10, 2024. The fuel hose and breather hose will be replaced by new ones at the Suzuki dealer. The new parts are identical to the original production parts, but are installed in such a way that no incorrect bending occurs and that the correct clearance in the path is maintained.
