After launching the new GSX-S1000 earlier this year, Suzuki has now unveiled the highly anticipated GSX-S1000 GT. The GT shares much of the tech of the sporty naked, but with an aggressive design that is prepared for optional luggage and a TFT color display with Bluetooth connectivity.
The most powerful and lightest sport-tour machine in its class, Suzuki claims in its press release of the new GSX-S1000 GT and with only the Ninja 1000 SX as a serious competitor, there is no word of a lie. The bicycle part with aluminum frame, swingarm and subframe as well as the block are derived from the sporty naked.
Most striking is the completely new design. The sharp lines of the fairing in combination with LED daytime running lights and headlights give this sport-tour machine a very aggressive appearance. The windshield, according to Suzuki, contributes to aerodynamic efficiency and driving comfort at high speed through its shape.
As mentioned, the 999 cc four-cylinder engine is technically the same as that of the GSX-S1000. It excels with high power and torque in a wide rev range. Electronically controlled ride-by-wire throttle control and a completely redesigned compact 4-2-1 exhaust system contribute to a linear torque build-up across virtually the entire rev range. The block produces 152 hp at 11,000 rpm and 106 Nm of torque at 9,250 rpm.
As far as electronics are concerned, Suzuki has gone a step further with this GSX-S1000 GT than with the naked version. In addition to Suzuki Easy Start System, ABS, Low RPM Assist and the Suzuki Drive Mode Selector (SDMS) with three positions, Suzuki now also offers cruise control.
The Suzuki Traction Control System (STCS) has five positions and can be turned off. A Bi-directional Quickshifter – which can also be switched off – enables lightning-fast upshifts and downshifts.
The bicycle part has also been adopted from the GSX-S1000, but adapted to the somewhat more touristic character of the bicycle. So we’re talking about a aluminum twin-spar frame with fully adjustable 43 mm Kayaba (KYB) front fork and also adjustable rear shock. The brakes and tires are also the same: Dunlop SPORTMAX Roadsport 2 tires and radially mounted Brembo Monobloc calipers with 310 mm discs.
According to Suzuki, the seat height (810 mm) and the position of the handlebars ensure a relaxed sitting position that can be effortlessly maintained for hours. The handlebar mount and rubberized footpegs eliminate vibration. The large (19 litre) fuel tank provides a large range.
What really makes us happy is the fact that Suzuki has now finally exchanged LCD for a 6.5″ TFT color screen with USB contact for charging the smartphone. With the Suzuki mySPIN app, any smartphone (with iOS or Android operating system) via wireless LAN and Bluetooth.
With Suzuki mySPIN app you can select and activate all functions, which are displayed on the TFT screen, with the switches on the left side of the handlebar. From the basic menu with five choices (contacts, phone, maps, music and calendar) you can find the necessary functions and information in a user-friendly way. In addition, Suzuki mySPIN offers the possibility to view information about the completed rides on your smartphone.
The horizontal LED headlight with position lighting gives the Suzuki GSX-S1000GT a unique and recognizable face. Turn signals, tail light and brake light are also equipped with LED technology. The optional side cases in color complement the sharp design of the Grand Tourer.
There is a choice of three colors for the GSX-S1000GT: Metallic Triton Blue, Metallic Reflective Blue and Glass Sparkle Black. The new GSX-S1000GT is expected at the Suzuki dealer this year.
