Do you ever find yourself somewhere and want to show someone a certain picture, but then find out that you don’t have that one picture on your phone? Thanks to Mylio you can synchronize the photos on all your devices. You can also see what’s floating around on your mobile devices at home.
Mylio is a synchronization app that ensures that you can view and maintain photos that are spread across multiple devices as one large photo collection on your computer. An important difference with other synchronization services is that the photos are only on your computer, smartphone or tablet and do not end up somewhere on a server in the cloud. They are also not sent over the internet. So you sync directly between your own devices. This is how it works.
to install
It’s best to install Mylio first on your computer and only then on a smartphone or tablet. An app is available for Windows, Mac, Android, iPhone and iPad†After installing the Windows app, you will see a few introduction screens, after which you have to sign in. This account is needed to know between which devices you want to sync.
Then you indicate which photos you want to synchronize via Mylio. Choose This device and automatically search for photos on the internal drive or designate a photo folder yourself via Manually Locate Files†Mylio only maps your photos, nothing is moved.
Free or paid
You can use Mylio for free with three devices and five thousand photos. You can therefore immediately get started with something like a computer, smartphone and a tablet. Do you have a large photo collection? Then see if you can only have the most recent images synchronized, for example those of the current year. If you want to be able to view all photos anytime and anywhere, you unfortunately cannot avoid a subscription.
photo collection
Once the configuration has been completed and you have arrived at the main screen, the imported photos can be viewed in various ways. Click on under the menu bar All Photos to show all material, or choose calendar to see when you took which photos.
Bee folder use a map to discover the locations where photos were taken. They must then contain location data, which makes this work especially well with phone photos†Does a photo have no location data or are they incorrect, but do you know where the picture was shot? Then drag it to the correct spot on the map.
below people you see photos in which Mylio thinks he recognizes people. Bee leaflets you will find all the folders you have added and Albums use to create your own collections such as birthdays or holidays. An album contains photos that you would like to see together without having to move the physical photo files, which are spread over several folders.
Main overview
whether you calendar†folderor leaflets choose, you start with a main overview that you click through until you see the photos that were taken on a certain date or location or that are in a specific folder. Bee All Photos you can see all the images right away.
If you click on a photo thumbnail, you will see on the right side of the tab Info information such as the file name and camera data, while the tab folder the photo location. Don’t see any tabs? Then click on the arrow at the top of the column with icons along the screen edge.
Double-click to enlarge a photo, after which you can quickly and easily browse through your photos via a filmstrip. To return to the previous overview, click on < at the top left or press . on your keyboard escâ€
Add folders
Do you want to add additional computer folders to Mylio? Click on the three dots at the top right, choose Settings / Source folders / Add more folders and point to the folder(s). You can remove a folder from Mylio again by turning off the switch in the list. The app itself monitors whether anything changes in these folders, so that new photos automatically appear in Mylio.
Want to move one or more photos to another folder? Drag them to the bottom of the screen, drop them into the clipboard that automatically appears, and then drag them to a destination folder. If it is an album, only a shortcut will be placed and you will not physically move the files.
Mobile Devices
The next step is to install Mylio on your smartphone or tablet and it works largely as you just did on the computer. As long as you use the same account, your photos are automatically synced between all devices known in Mylio. You can see that a synchronization is running by the rotating blue circle in the top right corner of the device icon. Once you see a green check there, everything is synced.
It is important to know that synchronization is only possible as long as the computer and mobile device are turned on and connected to the same (home) network. In addition, on mobile devices the app must be running in the foreground, on the computer the app only needs to be started.
Synchronization method
You can set how to synchronize. On the computer, click on Dashboard and for a mobile device, tap the device icon to open this dashboard. Then you go to Devicestap or click a device and choose Device Quality†Usually here Auto Optimized selected, meaning copies are reduced to save storage space. This is especially useful on a smartphone or tablet. The photos are still large enough to view, edit and share.
Would you rather have all photos in full size on one device? You can do that by switching to vault†For example, turn on your computer vault, then you will receive all mobile photos in full size; you usually have enough storage space on that device. The synchronization status of this vault is indicated by an additional icon.
Are you taking out a subscription and managing your entire photo collection with Mylio? Then add a NAS, external drive or cloud service by adding: Devices on Add click and here again vault to choose as the synchronization method. That way, all your photos are automatically backed up and you won’t lose them if your phone, tablet or internal drive fails.
Gone and right back
Have you designated an external drive or other device as a vault? Then something remarkable happens as soon as you delete a photo outside Mylio on your computer (for example via Windows Explorer). A few seconds later, the photo is suddenly back! That’s because Mylio protects you from accidental photo loss. If you delete the photo from Mylio, this will not affect you.
Do you find this behavior annoying? Tap the three dots at the top right, choose Settings / Source Folders and switch Safe delete on Vaults from. The same can be done via the dashboard at Devices go to your computer and Safe Delete to turn off. If you then delete a photo in Mylio or outside it, it will disappear (on the next synchronization stroke) from every device.
Editing picture’s
Do you want to edit a photo? On an iPad or computer this can be done via the third tab edit, when viewing a photo or thumbnail of it. On a smartphone, tap the pen. You can apply filters, fix red-eye, crop or rotate the image, and play with brightness, contrast, sharpness and colors. Changes are saved separately, so the original always remains intact.
Edits are also synced to all your devices, so what you do on your phone on the go will be reflected on your computer later. Want to use an edited photo for something like printing or sharing it with someone? Then you first have to export the image as a new photo file. On an iPad or computer, you’ll find the share icon above the three tabs, on a smartphone at the bottom of the screen.
It is advisable to save photos that you export at the highest quality, unless a smaller copy is sufficient of course. On a computer, you set this as soon as you export the photo. Then choose at Resolution for the highest (original) variant, at Quality for example for Maximum and check Metadata immediately check all options to enrich the photo with all kinds of useful information. On an iPad or smartphone, you set the same options before you export the photo. Tap the three dots and choose Settings / Export & Sharingâ€
One last tip. Stop your Mylio via File / Close or with hotkey Alt+F4, the app will continue to run in the background, so you can still sync your photos. Usage File / Exit or hotkey Alt+X to close the app completely.
Face Detection
In the section People / Untagged you will find all the photos that Mylio thinks may contain people. Do you recognize anyone? Click or tap the question mark below the photo and type a name. With each subsequent photo you can immediately point to this person, give a different name, or choose Ignore if you don’t want to mark someone or if there are no people to be seen.
All photos with recognized people are neatly grouped in the section people†In addition, wherever you view a large photo, you can assign names by the icon Face tag to make it active.
