Whether it is a few minutes of break in the office or a longer trip – it is worth gaining a regular distance and doing something good for yourself. We show you why and how.

A short break from everyday life may be necessary for various reasons:

Taking regular breaks in everyday life will help you work more effectively and to live more stress -free, according to a study by the Federal Institute for Occupational Safety and Occupational Medicine. They have a positive effect on your mood. We present the three most important tips for breaks in everyday life:

  • Short breaks at work: The technician health insurance fund recommends taking a short break for five minutes every hour. In this way, you can not only work more effectively, but also proceed against your fatigue. For this short break there are, for example, relaxation exercises, yoga, meditation, small walks or short conversations with a colleague: inside.

  • Occasionally afternoon sleep: some people also help a short afternoon sleep. However, this should not take much longer than twenty minutes, otherwise you will get into the deep sleep phase and then you will be really awake again. So better do a power NAP if you want to take a little break at noon.

  • Plan ME-TIME: Outside of work, you should plan enough time for yourself to pursue your hobbies and passions. That can be a jogging round. Maybe you like to paint or want to spend an evening in the bathtub.

It is important that you deliberately plan these times. While you take these little time off, you should switch off your cell phone so that you are not accessible to anyone and fully concentrate on yourself.

Taking a longer break can offer a great chance to travel, find yourself or to volunteer. The possibilities are numerous. We introduce you to the three most popular shapes:

  • Voluntary service: It can be very enriching and fulfilling to complete a break in the form of a voluntary service. For example, make a voluntary ecological year to get involved in the environment. So you not only do something good for nature and other people, but you will also get to know yourself from a completely different side. According to a study by the Westphalian Wilhelms-Universität Münster, personal education and professional orientation are the most important goals from the perspective of the volunteers and sponsors. However, make sure that you differentiate real social engagement of volunteerism, which unfortunately unfortunately only means more exploitation for the global south.

  • Sabbatical: If you want a sabbatical as a professional break, you share this dream with half of all workers: inside in Germany, as a study by the Science Center for Social Research in Berlin and the Rosa-Luxemburg Foundation. As a rule, a sabbatical lasts between three and twelve months.
