With the Windows 11 operating system, you can take a screenshot of the contents of your screen in various ways. We’ll cover the basic options and we’ll look at the more advanced options.
The most obvious option, also in Windows 11, is of course the physical PrtScnbutton (Print Screen). When you press that button, Windows makes a digital printout of the contents of the screen, even if you have a second or third screen connected. You can then paste that image into a program such as Paint or Photoshop or a word processor such as Word. A handy tip for users of multiple monitors: by Alt + PrtScn pressing it takes an image of an active (and thus a single) display. You can also save screenshots directly as a file by pressing the Windows key together with PrtScrn. The file will then be saved as a .png file, in the Pictures folder.

Capture part of the Windows 11 screen
In line with the above options, you can also have a part of the (active) screen captured. This way you can use the button combination at any time Shift + Windows + S impressions. The screen will then be darkened, while you will see an editing bar at the top. Now you can select a part of the screen with your mouse that you want to cut out. You can cut in four ways: in a square, in a free form, a specific window or the entire field. With your mouse you determine the size of the shape you want to make when you select one of the first two options. The created snippet is in your clipboard, ready to be pasted into a file.
Windows 11 also makes taking a screenshot somewhat easier with a handy tool. The function mentioned above is called ‘screen snipping’, in English, or Cut and markup, in Dutch. You can also achieve this function in another way, so you can skip the difficult button combination to enter. First press Windows + i to open the settings. Then go to your keyboard settings and indicate that you want to use the screen snipping tool. When you then press the PrtScn button in the future, Windows 11 will open the handy tool. Via that tool you can press New to take a screenshot, which you can then immediately add to or edit. You can read how to use the tool here.
