Tank behavior changes: hoarding at an unmanned pump

Fuel prices are skyrocketing and you probably think twice before filling up your tank somewhere. Fuel card operator MoveYou has noticed some striking behavioral changes since the unrest in Ukraine.

No doubt you know that small gas stations far away from the highway are often the cheapest. However, sometimes convenience wins out on the wallet, but since the war in Ukraine broke out, the search for economical refueling has increased even more. MoveYou concludes this on the basis of tank transactions from affiliated customers. MoveYou has 36 own TanQyou unmanned filling stations and 700 connected unmanned locations. There has been a lot more refueling since Russia’s invasion of Ukraine.

Director Jan Harmen Akkerman sees this as a clear shift from the normal situation: “Due to the situation in Ukraine, prices are of course rising, but we see sales peaks at our stations. In recent days we sold 40 percent more liters than in the last week of January and even compared to the day before the declaration of war. On the one hand, that hoarding behavior is to get ahead of even higher prices, on the other hand it is a major shift from mainly the expensive highway locations.”

According to Akkerman, travel behavior hardly changes, but the fuel location does. According to him, this does not only apply to private individuals: “More than ever before, people are opting for unmanned filling stations and for pumps on the underlying road network. Private motorists have already ignored highway stations anyway, now even more, and more and more employers urge their staff to refuel away from the highway with the lease car.”
