Tesla aims to produce 2 million cars by 2023

Tesla CEO Elon Musk is aiming for a production number of 2 million cars by next year. That reports Automotive News based on Musk’s speech to shareholders. Tesla also wants to build a fifth factory in addition to the four current factories. Tesla will probably announce its location this fall.

Tesla’s four current factories are located in Fremont, Shanghai, Grünheide and Austin. According to Musk, those four factories together currently have a production capacity of 1.5 million cars per year. If Tesla wants to achieve that figure this year, production will have to be significantly increased. In the first half of this year, Tesla produced 563,987 cars. This means that 936,013 cars should be added in the second half of this year.

That goal is not very unattainable, by the way: in 2021 Tesla produced more than 930,000 cars. Since the factories in Grünheide and Austin were not yet open at the time, Musk’s claim of 1.5 million cars is credible. In addition, Tesla had problems in China this year due to the lockdowns in Shanghai and not everything went according to plan in Germany. At the beginning of 2023, the production capacity of the four factories will be much higher, according to Musk: by then Tesla should be able to produce 2 million cars annually. 2023 will be an important year for Tesla anyway, because then the first copies of the Cybertruck should also roll off the production line in Texas.

Musk further states that the Model Y is the model that generates the most sales for Tesla today. Next year, Musk expects that the Model Y will also take the lead from the Model 3 in terms of volume. In terms of profitability, Tesla is in pretty good shape this year: in the second quarter the brand was able to record a profit of €2.21 billion. note, 98 percent more than in the second quarter of 2021.

New factory

In addition to Tesla’s four existing factories, the brand wants to open a new ‘Gigafactory’ in the near future. The location of the new factory is expected to be announced this year. Incidentally, that is certainly not the last factory that Tesla will build, because Musk would not be Musk if his ambitions were not sky-high. Tesla is aiming for a production capacity of 20 million cars per year in the long term, which, according to Musk, will require ten to twelve factories, each with an annual production capacity of 1.5 to 2 million cars. To reach that number, the current factories still have a long way to go.
